Airedale Terrier
Most people think of terriers as feisty little dogs who are bursting with energy. The Airedale Terrier bucks that trend, as this large, dignified dog presents itself with a kingly air. Indeed, it is referred to as the “King of Terriers”. This is a versatile dog breed that excels at hunting, sports, and companionship. The Airedale Terrier is a dog that will challenge their owner. They may be low-maintenance when it comes to grooming, but require focused attention when it comes to training and exercise. The owner’s reward for this is a dog that can truly do it all. Airedale Terriers approach life with an intense focus, and their enthusiasm for both work and play mean they do well at both.
Alaskan Malamute
Alaskan Malamutes look like wolves, and an unaware or inexperienced person may even mistake them for wolves. Indeed, they often play wolves in movies and on TV. This ancient breed still looks much like it did 4000 years ago, hence the similarity to their wild cousins. Unlike actual wolves, Alaskan Malamutes are people pleasers, through and through. These strong, muscular, and hardy dogs were born for the brutal cold of the Arctic circle. Though they are often companion dogs now in urban areas, they still excel as all-around working dogs in Alaska and other equally cold climates.
American Bulldog
The American Bulldog exemplifies the term “big softie”, with their incredibly muscular build and sweet disposition. They may be all-around working dogs and guardians, but they also excel at being family dogs. Their athletic bodies make them suited to a wide range of tasks, but what they love the most is to spend time with their owners. Their loyalty and devotion to their humans is almost legendary, and they will reward a patient and caring owner with all the love they can give. They do ask for a lot of attention and training, and they need an active owner who will spend a lot of time with them, but the payoff is a wonderful companion and family dog who gets along with almost everyone.
Australian Cattle Dog
As is to be expected, the Australian Cattle Dog was bred to herd cattle. They’re also known as Blue Heelers, Australian Heelers, or Queensland Heelers. When they’re not doing their designated task of keeping rowdy livestock under control, they’re likely by their owner’s side, as this breed bonds very well with humans. Their unwavering work ethic and exceptional physical abilities have made them popular farm dogs all over the world. These are courageous, tireless, and focused working dogs who just so happen to be gentle with humans and protective of their territory. While they are a challenge for novice owners, experienced owners will get the most out of these dogs.
Australian Shepherd
Australian Shepherds approach life with a surefooted gait and a keen eye. If dogs were people, the Australian Shepherd would be the straight-A student and a star athlete at the same time. This breed is sharp-witted, agile, and energetic, making them a perfect dog for their intended work of herding livestock. The Australian Shepherd or Aussie is a born and bred ranch dog, and has been the dog of choice of cowboys and sheep herders for over a hundred years. Modern Aussies that don’t live on farms often participate in dog sports that maximize their natural athleticism.
Basset Hound
Despite their soulful eyes and perpetually sad expression, Basset Hounds are loving and easygoing dogs who make friends with everyone they meet. These calm, relaxed dogs make great family pets and adapt well to most environments. They’re cheerful and happy to be around people and other dogs. Most Basset Hounds are kept as pets these days, but their hound genetics mean that they’re excellent at following a scent. These long, low-slung dogs get close to the ground to better track down their prey. However, the most that many Basset Hounds will track down is some food, as they love to eat. They enjoy being lap dogs, or at least try to be, as they can be very heavy for their height.
Beagle
Beagles are fun-loving little scamps that enjoy spending time with humans and other dogs. These inquisitive little hounds have a much bigger dog’s appetite for play, adventure, and companionship. They’re cheerful, they’re clever, and most of all, they’re great with people. Most Beagles are easygoing and gentle most of the time, except when they catch the scent of something interesting, then the hound takes over and they’re determined and focused. They’re prone to mischief, since they’re so playful and adventurous. Beagles are experts in giving their owners the “puppy dog eyes,” and are smart enough to use it when they get into trouble.
Belgian Malinois
The Belgian Malinois has become a staple of military service, police work, search and rescue, and even canine sports. This breed has distinguished itself as a protector and all-around working dog. Their no-frills appearance just serves to highlight the utilitarian nature of the breed. These extremely powerful, intelligent, and driven animals were born to work. If there could be one word to describe the Belgian Malinois, it would be “intense”. The Belgian Malinois will constantly push themselves to new heights, and are looking for owners who can do the same.
Bernese Mountain Dog
The Bernese Mountain Dog is an image of strength, peace, and rugged beauty, much like the mountains from where it hails. This burly dog has a stoic and calm persona shaped by the environment of Bern, the Swiss canton where it was developed. It is by far the most popular out of the four Swiss mountain dog breeds in existence. Endless fields of green, steep mountainsides, and deep cold lakes of water are this breed’s natural habitat. To this day the Bernese Mountain Dogs are tireless all-around farm dogs and loyal companions. They’re a breed that excels at drafting and pulling carts, owing to their immense strength and hardworking demeanor.
Bichon Frise

They’re happy-go-lucky companions who get along well with children, other dogs, and strangers. They’re curious and alert, and can adapt well to even novice dog owners. The Bichon is a born performer, quick and agile on their feet. Bichons are full of charm and comedy, and will not hesitate to clown around for their friends and family. They’ve been doing this for hundreds of years, and their good-natured temperament is a big reason for the breed’s longevity.
Bloodhound
The Bloodhound is one of the most recognizable breeds in the world – after all, who can forget their droopy face, long ears, and well-built body. But this breed goes beyond appearances, and these dogs have an impressive sense of smell that has made them hunting companions for hundreds of years, if not thousands. Bloodhounds have been portrayed in media and pop culture as the “Sherlock Holmes” of dogs, able to sniff out clues and fugitives, and that is certainly something at which they excel. But they’re also laid-back and gentle family dogs who love to spend time with humans.
Border Collie
The Border Collie is an amazing dog breed that can do it all, but is equally demanding of its owners. If there was one word to describe a Border Collie, it would be “overachiever.” These energetic, loyal, and incredibly intelligent dogs are the world’s premiere herding breed. They’re athletic, muscular, and balanced dogs who move with sure-footed grace in everything they do. Border Collies love to work, and love to play once the work is done. But they don’t just love being active, they also have an intense love for their owners and family members.
Boston Terrier
The Boston Terrier is a dapper little American gentleman, with a signature black and white tuxedo coat. This good-natured and affectionate little breed has a distinctive look and big sweet eyes that will melt even the most chilly of hearts. Even though they’re not a working breed, Boston Terriers are almost never idle – they’re always on the lookout for playmates. Boston Terrier owners will have to be prepared to make new friends, as their dog is going to introduce them to everyone they come across. But don’t worry, a Boston Terrier will always prefer to spend the most time with their chosen human, whether it’s lounging on the couch or sprinting around the block. These little dogs want to enjoy every second of life, and will do it most happily with you by their side.

These large and powerful dogs are also sweet and good-natured, almost never aggressive, and they thrive on human companionship. Bullmastiffs are surprisingly mellow despite their appearance, and are calm and composed in most situations. They enjoy relaxing on the couch more than playing around, but are game for almost any adventure with their owners.
Cane Corso
A Cane Corso is reminiscent of a Roman Centurion: commanding and imposing with a quiet air of confidence. These ancient working dogs have excelled at many roles throughout their long history. While the Cane Corso may give off the appearance of a professional bodyguard, they are also affectionate and are eager to please their humans.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Chihuahua
The Chihuahua is famous for being the ultimate purse dog. This national symbol of Mexico is renowned for being the smallest dog breed, but makes up for its diminutive stature with a personality as big as any giant breed dog. Chihuahuas enjoy life to the fullest, and they love being around and spending time with their human companions. The Chihuahua is a portable little pet, at home inside tote bags and purses. They form deep bonds with their guardians, and are both loyal and courageous when it comes to protecting their family.
Cocker Spaniel
A Cocker Spaniel can be disarmingly adorable with their long, flowing locks, but buried beneath this glamorous exterior is the heart of a hunter. This pint-sized hunting dog may not look the part, but they’ve been loyal gundogs for hundreds, or possibly thousands of years. While they have a history as being relentlessly reliable sporting dogs, Cocker Spaniels are also excellent companions. Their merry personalities and affection for humans make them wonderful family pets. Add to that their big, sweet eyes and love of adventure, and it’s easy to see why these sturdy little dogs are so popular.
Corgi
The Corgi is best known for being Queen Elizabeth II’s favorite dog breed, but its appeal goes well beyond its renown as a royal housepet. Corgis are one of America’s most loved breeds due their affectionate nature and charming looks. When we hear the name “Corgi” we typically think of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, though there is another variant called the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. However, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is the type we’ll be talking about on this page, as it is vastly more popular than the Cardigan. While they may have been originally bred to be herding dogs, they’re now more commonly kept as companion animals. Corgis have gotten exposure in pop culture and social media, becoming one of the more sought-after breeds due to their cute and cuddly appearance
Dachshund
The Dachshund has one of the most distinctive silhouettes among all dog breeds. Its long, low body and short, stubby legs have earned it the name “sausage dog” among many of the breed’s fans. Dachshunds have been popular in both real life and in pop culture, owing to their fun-loving and lively personalities. While they are now kept as companion dogs, they also have a long history of being alert watchdogs and fierce hunters.

This unique breed is one of the most iconic dog breeds in the world. They consistently turn heads with their distinctive black and white spots and calm, distinguished demeanor. This breed isn’t just about its looks. In real life, Dalmatians are renowned as firehouse dogs, hunters, and performers. They move with an effortless gait thanks to their well-balanced and athletic bodies. They were bred to be all-around protectors of horse-drawn carriages, but nowadays most Dalmatians are sweet, devoted family dogs.

Their striking coat gives them a distinctive look, and their physiques are slim but well-muscled. They’re well-balanced dogs that excel at both work and family life. Taking care of a German Shorthaired Pointer is a daily adventure, and one that they’ll happily join.
Golden Retriever
Golden Retrievers are consistently in the top three most popular dog breeds in America. They could be called the biggest puppies in the world, as their fun-loving and playful personalities carry on well into adulthood. Despite their reputation for clowning around with their family members, they also have a serious side when it comes to work. The Golden Retriever was originally bred to be a gundog, and its work ethic and intelligence make it well suited for a wide variety of tasks. Great Danes are equal parts hardy working dog and cheerful companion. Everything about them is giant-sized: their loyalty, their courage, and their heart. Despite their imposing size and appearance, they’re playful and gentle with their human companions.
Greyhound
Greyhounds are simply built to run. These natural athletes are the fastest dogs by far, clocking in at an incredible 40 to 45 miles per hour in some cases. But that’s not all they do – they’ve also found success in other dog sports where their agility and speed are useful. When they’re not competing, Greyhounds are known for their mild demeanor and love of comfort. Their slender, inverted-S shaped build has been the fascination of dog breeders and dog lovers for hundreds of years. The Greyhound is the classic racing dog upon which all others are judged.
Havanese
The Havanese is a toy breed that has won the hearts of dog lovers all over the world. It’s also known as the little white dog of Havana or the Havana Silk Dog, and is the national dog of Cuba. The Havanese has both a razor-sharp intelligence and charming silken locks, making them ideal companions for those who want their dog to be both biddable and beautiful. They are natural lap dogs but they’re not couch potatoes – they’re playful and are prone to clowning around to make their owners laugh. The Havanese has an affectionate nature and enjoys spreading their love to strangers, family members, and even other animals. These dogs are wonderfully versatile pets and fit well into any family.

They’re smart, charming, and fearless dogs who yearn for adventure.
Labradoodle
Labradoodles are charming crossbreed dogs resulting from the mating between a Labrador Retriever and the miniature or standard Poodle. This hybrid is just one of the many Poodle mixes that have become increasingly popular among people with dog allergies. The goal for the creation of the Labradoodle was to have a hypoallergenic guide dog. That meant creating an intelligent, loyal, and gentle companion with a coat that could trap shed hair and dander. Many Labradoodles possess these qualities, but are highly dependent on the skill and quality of the breeders. A well-bred and healthy Labradoodle is a versatile, friendly, and affectionate animal that is capable of filling many roles – whether as a family pet or as a working dog.
Labrador Retriever
The Labrador Retriever could very well be called America’s Dog, as it has been the favorite breed for many decades. Maltese
Dog breeds of all sorts have been living with humans since as far back as recorded history. They often have work or important duties to fulfil for their masters – but a few breeds have no job to do aside from being pampered and adored. This is something the Maltese has done for over 2,500 years. These natural lap dogs are precisely that – meant to relax in luxury, bringing joy and comfort to their masters. They’re charming, graceful, and gentle, seldom putting a foot out of place or causing their owners to fret. The Maltese has one goal in life, and it’s to see you smile.

Pomeranian
Pomerianians, or Poms, are probably the most popular of the toy dog breeds. These tiny dogs have personalities that can match that of the royalty and aristocrats who have owned them throughout the years. Intelligent, perky, and alert would probably be the three most apt words to describe a Pomeranian. They’re a friendly and outgoing breed, with courage that far exceeds their small stature. These fox-faced little charmers are deceptively good at being watchdogs, as well as being excellent family pets.
Poodle
The Poodle is the dog world’s valedictorian, prom king or queen, and varsity captain all rolled into one. This breed is known for its sweet and gentle disposition, outgoing nature, and elegant appearance.
